Our Story
How the dream of creating an ecological education centre in the heart of the Atlantic Forest was born.
The Beginning of Everything
The beginning of Santuário Jacupemba is the story of protecting a piece of Atlantic Forest and shaping a sanctuary around it, a place where ecological education, forest restoration and respect for animals meet naturally.
The name "Jacupemba" comes from the local bird: the supercilious curassow (mutum-de-bico-vermelho), known regionally as the jacupemba, native to the Atlantic Forest. Choosing this name celebrates the natural identity of the region and the commitment to preserving all species that live here.
On our first morning at the sanctuary, we woke to a strange barking sound coming from the garden. Thinking it might be a wounded dog, we rushed outside to help, and instead found a large bird up in the loquat trees, swallowing the fruit whole. It was a jacupemba. From that day on, they became a constant and joyful presence around the house. If you stay at the sanctuary, you might be lucky enough to hear, or even see, one of them yourself.

The Atlantic Forest
Located in Alto Santa Maria, in the municipality of Marechal Floriano, Espírito Santo, our sanctuary lies within the Atlantic Forest biome. Previous owners planted eucalyptus across part of the land, altering the forest's natural composition. One of our first major projects will be to restore these areas gradually with indigenous Atlantic Forest trees, creating richer habitats for native wildlife to return and thrive.
This will be a long-term process: restoring the soil, protecting water sources, planting a diverse mix of indigenous trees and allowing wildlife to return as the forest recovers.
Our Journey
Land Purchase
Vera purchases the land in Alto Santa Maria, Marechal Floriano, Espírito Santo; the place that will later become the foundation for the sanctuary vision.
First Buildings Completed
The main administration building and guest house are built on the land, creating the first physical foundation for the future sanctuary project.
Vera and Ryan Meet
Vera and Ryan meet in the UK, beginning the shared path that will bring together ecological education, animal protection, and the future of Jacupemba.
Jacupemba Begins
Vera and Ryan marry and move to Brazil. Santuário Jacupemba is founded, and early engagement begins with local committees, schools, and community partners.
Growing with Love
From 2027 onwards, Jacupemba grows step by step; developing education programmes, preparing sanctuary infrastructure, restoring the land, and getting ready to welcome the first rescued animals.
